The Mandarin Toastmasters are a group to be reckoned with in Division K. They contribute much towards the success of Division K in achieving its vision and mission. Theirs is a closely knitted group, which participates readily in the mainstream activities of the Division.
Among the 7 Mandarin Toastmasters clubs in Division K, the KK Mandarin and the Tawau Mandarin are perhaps the most active. At the recent Division K 9th Semi Annual Convention, most of the Mandarin participants were from these two clubs, led by Wong Phong Yun, CTM and Datin Yuen Siew Kien, CTM respectively. The members participated actively in the programme, adding merriment and excitement to the fellowship night in particular and the convention in general. They also formed a strong contingent to the recent District 51 Semi Annual Convention in Kuala Lumpur 25 to 28 November 2004, accounting for one-third of the participants from Division K.
In terms of educational achievements, the Mandarin clubs are on par with the best English clubs. The KK Mandarin's consistency in achieving the President's Distinguished Club status matches that of the KKTMC, the largest and oldest club in Division K. Last term, the Tawau Mandarin Club completed the term with a Select Distinguished Club status.
To date, the Mandarin group has produced two DTMs - Dr Jacob Yan and Paul Yang - and countless strong leaders. These leaders include Fung Thin Ken, ATM-B, Justin Chong, ATM-G, Leong Shar Cheong, ATM-G, Ray Chia, ATM-B, Jimmy Tsen, CTM, Chen Nyet Siong, ATM-B and many more, who can at anytime assume the post of Division K Governor.
At the recent District 51 Semi Annual Convention, the Mandarin members brought glory to the Division alongside their English counterparts when Nico Liew, ATM-B of the KK Mandarin Club clinched second runner-up placing in the Mandarin Humorous Speech Contest. Many of the Mandarin members were present to see Nico win a spot at the contest.
Of course, the Mandarin group also has its share of troubled clubs. However with the presence of strong leaders in the group and the support from the rest of the Toastmasters in Division K, we are confident that the Mandarin group will finish the current term successfully.
All positive signs are pointing towards that direction.
