Speech Marathon by the Brunei Speakers Club
Contributed by Alicia Wong, CTM

The Speech Marathon held on 5 October 2004 at Blues Café was a success, with 31 guests and members! With 4 speakers from BSC and 1 from HSBC Speakers Group, it was our first joint activity since the installation dinner.

Our Vice President Membership, Melanie Chin, ATM-B, helmed the meeting as Toastmaster of the Evening and she did a fine job, as per the evaluation from Geoff Andrew, DTM. All five speakers delivered their best performance! TM Hasnol Salleh received a standing ovation for his Ice-Breaker, “How Life Shaped Me,” while TM Peter Wright and TM Nurul Jafriah took the next step with their CTM 2 speeches. Peter shared with us a classic textbook example of a wide-body aircraft crash and cleverly weaved in a lesson on the importance of communication, while Nurul extolled the joy of shopping, which instantly had all the women rooting for her. TM Lim Kwee gestured his way into CTM 4 with his speech “Bonus” with tips on how to ensure that you get a nice fat bonus at year-end and Clovis Lai, CTM ended the evening with an inspirational speech entitled “The Measure of Time” (his first manual project speech in 10 years!). We all were touched by his recollection of his children when they were growing up.

In short, it was a night that was enjoyed by all. Clovis won the Best Speaker Award and TM Caryn Lim was recognised for inviting the most number of guests for that night. She single-handedly brought 7 of her colleagues from BAG Networks! What a girl!

President Rozana Yunos, CTM thanked everyone, from the office bearers, to the evaluators and guests, who made the night possible!
